Shotokan Karate is comprised of 26 katas, each with their own emphasis on fast and slow or controlled and powerfull movements. Virtually all of the katas taught today in the Shotokan system have two kiai points. Basics. Just because an art doesn't call it "kata" doesn't mean the style doesn't do "kata." They ALL begin learning deliberate, step by step basic techniques and EVERYONE sucks at them as a beginner. Karate gets a bum rap, but I think that's only IF the practitioner ONLY does kata with no application practice.

Most karate styles tend to have several different katas, called "forms" in other martial arts, but for some reason, Miyagi-Do only has the one. The kata is taught to Daniel Larusso by Mr. Miyagi
